But 1st XV head coach Corstiaan Vermaak isn’t buying into any hype. He knows Piet Retief will arrive with wounded pride, renewed vigour, and a burning desire to set the record straight. Semi-finals are different beasts entirely, and last weekend’s scoreline means precisely nothing when knockout rugby arrives.
“We are excited for the weekend. We have had a few setbacks during the week but luckily there is enough depth that we will be able to field a strong team,” Vermaak said.
“We are expecting a massive onslaught from Piet Retief, and have already forgotten about last week’s result.”
It’s the perfect mentality, respect the opponent, acknowledge their threat, and prepare for their best performance. Piet Retief were embarrassed last weekend. They’ll be desperate to avoid a repeat, and that desperation could make them extremely dangerous.

Corneel van Dyk, head of sport at Marais Viljoen, knows exactly what’s coming.
“It is going to be tough to play them at home. They have a strong pack of forwards that are very physical. We are preparing for a strong maul, but I think their defence is vulnerable at times, so we will focus on good first phase possession,” van Dyk said.
“We want to build phases and stay patient. If we can do that, I believe the space will open up for us. We are going to have to be at our very best to beat them.”
