In one of the most dramatic exhibition matches in recent memory, SA Schools A snatched a breathtaking 34-33 victory over SA Schools at Grey High School on Thursday afternoon, scoring in the dying minutes before heroically defending their line as the final siren sounded. This was knockout rugby intensity without the knockout stakes, a match that delivered a finish that will be replayed for years to come.
SA Schools explode from the blocks
The SA Schools side announced their intentions within four minutes, Ethan van Biljon crossing after Lamla Mgedezi unselfishly provided the offload that created the space. At 7-0, the early rhythm and tempo belonged entirely to the favoured side, their handling slick and their intentions clear.
Tight-head prop Nic Salamousas looked ominously dangerous with ball in hand, carrying with purpose and demonstrating the kind of mobility that separates good props from great ones. The platform was set, and SA Schools intended to capitalise ruthlessly.
Moments later, hooker Theo Boshoff spotted space around the ruck and backed his instincts, picking up and powering under the posts to extend the advantage to 14-0. The halfback pairing of Travis Pheiffer and Mickyle Booise were moving the ball with venomous pace, their quick service creating overlaps that SA Schools A struggled to contain.
Pillar defence crumbles under pressure
The 22nd minute brought further punishment as Boshoff found space around the ruck once more, making crucial metres before offloading to Booise running the perfect support line. At 21-0, SA Schools appeared to be running away with proceedings, their attacking patterns clicking whilst SA Schools A struggled to escape their own half despite brave defensive resistance.
The pillar defence around the rucks proved SA Schools A’s Achilles heel in the first stanza, with Boshoff twice exploiting gaps that shouldn’t have existed at this level. Meanwhile, locks Lwandile Mlaba and Juvan Burden were disrupting SA Schools A’s lineouts superbly, denying them even the set-piece platform from which to launch counterattacks.
Roux strikes back for SA Schools A
The 26th minute finally brought relief for SA Schools A as they generated momentum through quick ball. Free State inside centre Ruan Roux ran the perfect line, stepping into space to cross and give his side hope at 21-7. Number eight Niel du Randt was delivering monster tackle after monster tackle, putting SA Schools under sustained pressure even as the scoreboard told a grim story.
The teams trudged off at halftime with SA Schools leading 21-7, but the second stanza promised fireworks.
Second half delivers drama by the bucketload
Early in the second period, Stefan van der Vyver put his considerable strength to the ultimate test, powering over the line to extend SA Schools’ advantage to 28-7. But SA Schools A refused to buckle, Aphelele Chamane using sheer size and power to crash over and narrow the gap to 28-12.
The 49th minute produced a moment of genuine quality as late replacement Lucretia Magua, called up after an injury to Olwethu Kosani, crossed following a brilliant offload from Drewyn Baron. At 28-19, SA Schools A had their tails up, putting phases together superbly, though handling errors continued to cost them dearly.
Final quarter becomes a slugfest
The 55th minute saw Jaydon Viljoen slot a penalty to cut the deficit to 28-22, but SA Schools responded through Achmat Behardien’s incredible stab kick that Luxolo Sonkonokono latched onto to score. At 33-22 with half an hour played in the second half, SA Schools appeared to have regained control.
The 66th minute swung momentum violently back towards SA Schools A. Nathan Aneke grabbed an interception and ran in a beautiful try to make it 33-29, setting up a grandstand finish that had the Grey High crowd on their feet.
Last-gasp drama delivers knockout blow
With the final four minutes ticking away, SA Schools A went coast to coast in a move that will be dissected in coaching sessions for months. Graeme College’s Magua made massive metres on one edge before the ball was swung to the opposite touchline, where Rhandzu Mkhabela scored in the corner to snatch the lead at 34-33.
As the siren sounded for fulltime, SA Schools earned a scrum – one final chance to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. They put phases together with desperate intensity, Burden making the last carry and gaining massive metres before being held up agonisingly over the line.
The whistle blew. SA Schools A had won 34-33 in one of the most thrilling training matches ever witnessed. Both sides had showcased the talent that earned them national recognition, but only one could emerge victorious from this absolute classic.
