Five-match winning streak meets rock-solid defence as Paul Roos Gimnasium look to settle last year’s score against Paarl Boys’ High in a King Price Derby Series blockbuster

Markötter is going to be absolutely heaving on Saturday afternoon. Two of the Western Cape’s most storied rugby schools collide in Stellenbosch, and the narrative couldn’t be more compelling. Paul Roos Gimnasium, riding a five-match winning streak, will be out for blood after last year’s 26-36 defeat to Paarl Boys’ High. The 14:00 kickoff can’t come soon enough for the Paul Roos faithful.

This isn’t just another fixture on the schools rugby calendar. This is traditional rugby at its finest, two proud institutions with generations of history, packed stands, and bragging rights on the line. With both sides in red-hot form, Saturday’s clash promises to deliver everything that makes schoolboy rugby the lifeblood of South African sport. Boishaai hold the psychological advantage as since 1973, the Boishaai outfit have been winners on 31 occasions, while the Maroon tide, has claimed 17 victories with one draw.

Form guide points to a classic

Paul Roos enter this derby with momentum firmly in their corner. Five consecutive victories, capped by last weekend’s commanding 41-17 demolition of Rondebosch Boys’ High, have the home side brimming with confidence. The attacking rugby they’ve produced in recent weeks has been scintillating, with left wing Cadynn Samuels and fullback Kyle Snyers dotting down regularly.

But Boishaai won’t be intimidated by PRG’s winning run. The Paarl outfit delivered one of their best performances of the season last weekend, dismantling Stellenberg High 29-7 with a defensive display that bordered on impeccable.

The stage is set for an absolute humdinger.

Boishaai’s dual threat

Paarl Boys’ High teams are synonymous with forward brutality. Generations of opposition have been ground into submission by their pack power, and this year’s vintage is no different. But reducing Boishaai to just their forwards does them a disservice, they’re blessed with serious talent behind the scrum too.

Fullback Dante Davids and utility back Jeneal Davids form a devastating one-two punch in the backline. Both are confident runners with pace, power and an eye for the tryline. Dante crossed twice against Stellies last weekend, showcasing his attacking instincts, whilst Jeneal has been racking up tries all season long with his ability to run excellent support lines.

When forwards create go-forward ball and you have finishers of this calibre lurking, tries become inevitable. PRG’s defence will need to be watertight to contain these two.

Erasmus focuses on character

Boishaai head coach Sean Erasmus knows his side is building something special, and it goes beyond just winning matches. Speaking ahead of Saturday’s derby, he emphasised the intangibles that make teams great.

“I was really proud of the boys’ character shown last weekend,” Erasmus said, reflecting on the Stellenberg victory. “Character is something we focus on, as we want the boys to improve from week to week.”

It’s a coaching philosophy that prioritises development over just results, though the results are certainly following. Erasmus’s approach centres on three pillars: Faith, Family and Team. Against PRG, those pillars will be tested thoroughly.

“The focus still remains on ourselves. We promised oursleves we want to keep growing, and all glory to God, for all the tries that we score. The team culture is the most important thing is the team culture. What we play how we play and who we play for,” said Erasmus.

The Maroon tide’s weapons

With flyhalf Travis Pheiffer back in the mix, Paul Roos have plenty of attacking tricks in their arsenal. Pheiffer’s return gives the hosts another playmaking dimension, and with Samuels and Snyers on fire out wide, the backline has multiple strike weapons.

But schoolboy rugby is won and lost up front, and PRG know they need to earn the right to unleash their backs. That responsibility falls on the shoulders of their forward pack, and specifically their set-piece operators.

Lock Stef de Villiers and hooker Chris Meyburgh have formed a dependable lineout combination that’s been crucial to Paul Roos’ five-match winning streak. Clean lineout ball provides the platform for everything PRG want to do in attack, and these two have delivered consistently.

De Villiers will have his hands full against Boishaai lock Trichard von Tonder who was brilliantl against Stellenberg.

Boishaai’s rolling maul has been a potent weapon all season. Openside flank Steven Muller crossed from a lineout maul against Stellies, but hooker JP Norton is equally dangerous at the back of that maul. When Boishaai get their driving game going, it takes a special defensive effort to stop them.

PRG’s defensive mindset, will be put to the ultimate test. They have shown that they are desperate in defence and not afraid of getting stuck in, on the physical front.

No clear favourite

What makes this derby even more enticing is the absence of a clear favourite. PRG have home advantage and momentum. Boishaai have that defensive solidity and traditional forward power. Both sides possess attacking weapons. Both are well-coached and disciplined.

Saturday afternoon in Stellenbosch promises to deliver every ounce of drama, passion and quality that makes traditional school rugby essential viewing.
