The 83-year wait is over. Pretoria Noord High School’s Black Lions have roared their way into the Virseker Noordvaal Bowl division after claiming their first title since 1943 with a comprehensive 46-26 victory over Standerton in the Division 2 finals.
Alongside Wonderboom, also from Pretoria, the Black Lions will be promoted into the Bowl division for 2027, replacing relegated Die Anker and Hugenote in a shake-up that’s about to inject serious Pretoria flavour into the competition.
This isn’t just promotion. This is redemption. This is history written by a generation of players who’ve delivered what 83 years of predecessors couldn’t. And the emotions pouring out of the Pretoria Noord community in the aftermath tell you everything about what this triumph means.
“Huge congratulations, boys! You have written history and created a moment that will forever be part of PNHS’s history,” the school declared in a statement posted to Facebook following the victory.
“To every parent, grandfather, grandmother, brother, sister, and old boy of PNHS – THANK YOU for standing by us this season, encouraging and believing. Your support means more than words can say. To all the staff of PNHS, thank you for every kilometre, every practice, every encouragement, and every bit of support that was given to our boys.”
It’s the kind of raw emotion that only ending an 83-year drought can produce. And now the Black Lions prepare for life amongst the Bowl division.
Pretoria dominance: Five schools in Bowl division
The 2027 Bowl division is about to become a Pretoria stronghold. With Eldoraigne relegated from the Shield to add even more capital city representation, there will now be five schools from Pretoria competing in the Bowl division: Eldoraigne, Midstream, Centurion, Pretoria Noord, and Wonderboom.
It’s a geographic concentration that creates fascinating derby potential whilst also raising logistical questions about how the division will be structured to maintain competitive balance whilst managing travel demands.
According to Tinus Diederiks, chairman of Noordvaal, the precise structure is still being finalised as organisers grapple with various considerations.
The Bowl division differs from the rest of Noordvaal’s tiers in that it’s divided into two pools of six schools each. How those 12 schools, including the five Pretoria representatives, will be split remains under discussion.
“How the schools will be divided is still being finalised as there are different aspects that need to be considered it is a process,” Diederiks explained.
Whatever structure emerges, the Bowl division promises to deliver compelling rugby in 2027.
Wonderboom join the promotion party
Whilst Pretoria Noord commanded the headlines with their historic triumph, Wonderboom also secured their promotion to the Bowl division, adding another Pretoria representative to the 2027 line-up.
Wonderboom’s promotion is significant in its own right, representing a school programme that’s built steadily towards this moment and now gets the opportunity to test themselves against higher-quality opposition in a more competitive environment.
Together, Pretoria Noord and Wonderboom replace Die Anker and Hugenote, who suffered relegation heartbreak after failing to maintain Bowl division status. For those two schools, 2027 will be about rebuilding, regrouping, and plotting an immediate return to the tier they’ve just departed.
Bowl division 2027: The Pretoria invasion
The 2027 Bowl division promises to be one of Noordvaal’s most geographically concentrated in recent memory. Five Pretoria schools amongst the 12 competing creates natural derby rivalries, reduces travel burdens for a significant portion of the division, and ensures capital city bragging rights will be fiercely contested throughout the season.
Eldoraigne arrive from the Shield after a disastrous campaign that saw them relegated immediately after gaining promotion in 2025. They’ll be desperate to arrest the slide and avoid further decline.
Midstream and Centurion provide established Bowl division quality, schools accustomed to competing at this level and capable of challenging for promotion to the Shield.
And now Pretoria Noord and Wonderboom join the fray, bringing fresh energy, promotion momentum, and the kind of hunger that makes newly promoted sides dangerous opponents.
However the pools are eventually divided, the Bowl division in 2027 will deliver compelling rugby. Pretoria derbies. Promotion races. Relegation battles. And somewhere amidst it all, the Black Lions of Pretoria Noord will be savouring every moment of life in a higher tier, 83 years in the making.
