Paul Roos Gimnasium claimed another northern scalp with a nerve-shredding 21-17 victory over Monument in the Noord Suid Day 1 main event, holding firm against a ferocious second-half comeback from the Krugersdorp side. Having toppled Affies the previous week, the Stellenbosch outfit showed championship mettle to withstand relentless pressure and maintain their unbeaten run.

The battle of the flyhalves took centre stage early, with Monument’s Jaydon Viljoen and Paul Roos’s Pheiffer trading tactical kicking blows in a territorial chess match. Both pivots probed for weaknesses, testing opposition back threes with high bombs and pinpoint grubbers.

Monument found their rhythm first, creating space and shipping the ball wide with ambition. Ruan Genis beat his man and looked destined for the tryline before being hauled down. The offload to Langeveldt kept hope alive, but Paul Roos’s scramble defence, as immaculate as it was against Affies, snuffed out the danger. A crucial turnover allowed Pheiffer’s boot to clear the lines and release the pressure.

Fourteen minutes in, the Paul Roos flyhalf had the first points-scoring opportunity. From 35 metres out and at a decent angle, Pheiffer made it look easy, bisecting the uprights to hand Paul Roos a 3-0 lead. Two minutes later, he was at it again. Another penalty, another three points. Paul Roos led 6-0, and Monument were on the back foot.

Then came the moment of brilliance that showcased Paul Roos’s ability to execute training ground moves under pressure. From a scrum, Pheiffer started behind the pack before attacking the underloaded side with pace and vision. He made valuable metres before offloading brilliantly to Kyle Snyers, who found Cadynn Samuels in support. The winger finished clinically to extend the lead to 11-0.

It was champagne rugby – multiple phases, intelligent running lines, and ruthless execution. Monument’s defensive system had been picked apart.

Paul Roos weren’t done. From another scrum, they ran the same setup but attacked the opposite side. Two phases later, big Tiaan Basson powered into the corner to make it 18-0. The Stellenbosch side’s ability to vary their attack off set-piece was causing Monument nightmares.

The Maroon Machine’s work at the breakdown proved immense throughout the first half. Time and again, they turned over Monument possession, killing attacks at source before launching devastating counter-punches. The halftime whistle confirmed an 18-0 lead for Paul Roos, and the northern outfit faced a mountain to climb.

Monnas roar back

Monument emerged from the sheds with fire in their bellies. A poor kick from Paul Roos gifted them field position, and Langeveldt pounced. The speedster burned three defenders with electric pace before diving over in the corner. At 18-5, the comeback was on.

Minutes later, Blessing Monareng produced a moment of individual brilliance. Reading a Paul Roos misfield perfectly, he snatched possession and raced 55 metres past flailing defenders to score under the posts. The conversion made it 18-12, and suddenly Monument were right back in the contest.

The Krugersdorp side’s brutal defending and transition play had turned the match on its head. Paul Roos, so dominant in the first half, were now hanging on for dear life.

Missed opportunities haunt monnas

Monument earned a penalty, and Viljoen , possessing a cannon for a foot, lined up a 32-metre kick. He had the distance comfortably, but pulled it wide of the uprights. Three valuable points gone begging, and you could sense the frustration radiating from the Monument camp.

The kicking battle belonged to Monument in the final third, but Paul Roos showed composure when it mattered. With 11 minutes remaining, Pheiffer slotted another penalty to extend the lead to 21-12. Breathing room, but only just.

Dying moments drama

Morne Noble fielded a bomb from Armitage and cut through Paul Roos’s defensive line with a beautiful support run. His kick through was weighted perfectly, but he lost the foot race to the tryline. Another opportunity squandered.

Monument earned a scrum penalty and sensed their chance, but Matthew van Deventer knocked on from the pass. With seven minutes remaining and needing two scores, the errors were killing them.

The Krugersdorp side finally breached the tryline in the dying moments, scoring a try that gave them hope but arrived too late. The final whistle confirmed a 21-17 victory for Paul Roos Gimnasium.
