PAARL – The biggest schoolboy rugby match in the world returns to Paarl this Saturday when top-ranked Paarl Gymnasium take on fierce rivals Paarl Boys’ High in front of an expected crowd of 25 000 at Faure Street Stadium.

The 2026 Paarl Interschools clash carries extra significance as Gimmies aim to extend a 13-match winning streak, while Boishaai hope to repeat last year’s miracle comeback when they stunned the favourites 35-33 in the dying moments.

This year the script appears similar. Paarl Gymnasium arrive as overwhelming favourites, sitting proudly atop national rankings since their sole defeat of the season. Meanwhile, Boishaai occupy sixth spot on the Ruggas rankings and fourth on the Fairtree rankings, having endured a testing campaign that included four defeats against top-tier opponents.

Gimmies’ dominant campaign

Paarl Gymnasium’s 2026 season has been nothing short of spectacular, bar one early hiccup. The Gimmies opened their campaign with a 20-19 loss to Stellenberg in March, but have not lost since, with their forward pack earning particular praise for their brutal efficiency in the tight exchanges.

Their campaign highlights read like a scoresheet from a video game. They hammered Menlopark 73-17 in March before defeating defending champions Affies 51-24 in April, a result that announced their championship credentials to the nation.

The Danie Craven derby in May saw Gimmies overwhelm traditional powerhouses Bishops 66-14 and Wynberg 61-14 in successive weeks, whilst their 68-22 demolition of fellow Paarl school Paul Roos in June showcased their attacking prowess.

Grey College, ranked seventh nationally, arrived in Paarl in April expecting a tight contest but left on the wrong end of a 29-14 scoreline. Most recently, Gimmies dispatched Rondebosch 52-24 last weekend in their final warm-up before interschools.

Captain Ethan Barker has led from the front all season, marshalling his troops with composure beyond his years. The centre has been instrumental in Gimmies’ attacking structures whilst their much-vaunted engine room has provided the platform for backline stars to flourish.

Boishaai’s season of resilience

Whilst Paarl Boys’ High may not have matched their rivals’ record, their 2026 campaign has been far from disappointing. Coach Sean Erasmus, in what could be his final match before a rumoured move to Maties, has overseen a major rebuild with only two regular starters retained from last year’s historic victory.

The Brug Street boys opened their account with a narrow 26-22 victory over Outeniqua in March before heading to the prestigious Noord-Suid tournament. There they suffered a heartbreaking 31-28 defeat to Garsfontein after leading for large periods, though they bounced back to thrash Jeppe 37-10.

April’s Wildeklawer tournament provided mixed fortunes. Boishaai edged past Northwood 21-18 in a thriller before falling 40-37 to Affies in another nail-biter where they led at halftime.

Their most disappointing result came in May when Grey College claimed revenge for their earlier loss to Gimmies, defeating Boishaai 31-21 in Bloemfontein despite a late fightback that brought the margin to three points before Grey’s flank Xander de Beer sealed victory.

But Boishaai showed character in bouncing back. They beat SACS 32-16, demolished Boland Landbou 49-21, and most recently crushed Durbanville 56-7 last weekend to build momentum heading into Saturday’s showdown.

Prop Max Malan, who earned SA Schools A selection at the Craven Week, has been a cornerstone in the scrum alongside scrumhalf Liam de Villiers and utility back Jeneal Davids, the only survivors from last year’s starting XV.

The ghosts of 2025

Last year’s result haunts this fixture. Paarl Gymnasium had marched through their season unbeaten and led comfortably before Boishaai produced one of schoolboy rugby’s greatest comebacks, scoring in injury time to snatch a 35-33 victory that stunned the 20 000-strong crowd.

That memory will fuel both sides. Gimmies are desperate to avoid a repeat whilst Boishaai know that on derby day, rankings mean nothing.

The stage is set

Saturday’s clash kicks off at 16:00 at Faure Street Stadium. SuperSport Schools will broadcast the match live.

For Paarl Gymnasium, victory would extend their remarkable run and cement their status as the best schoolboy side in South Africa. For Paarl Boys’ High, another upset would write a new chapter in this storied rivalry and give Sean Erasmus the perfect prize.
