Redemption on the menu as Grey High host Paul Roos

The Eastern Cape prepares to host a weekend of compelling schoolboy rugby action, headlined by Grey High School’s showdown with Paul Roos in Port Elizabeth. Two proud rugby institutions nursing recent wounds will collide in what promises to be an absolute cracker.

Redemption on the agenda for both sides

Grey will look to set the record straight after their humbling at the hands of Affies on the Easter festival circuit. That defeat stung, leaving questions about their ability to compete against the elite. Now, in front of their faithful home crowd, they have the opportunity to deliver answers.

Paul Roos arrive equally determined to bounce back. Their 10-point loss to Stellenberg ended an unbeaten run and exposed vulnerabilities in their armour, expect a ferocious response.

On paper, Paul Roos must be favourites to win, and win big. If the lethal triumvirate of Basson, Armitage and Pheiffer are firing on all cylinders, there will be no stopping the juggernaut from the winelands. Their attacking threat spans the entire width of the pitch.

Yet Grey High possess advantages of their own. Home ground familiarity can prove decisive in tight encounters, and Paul Roos could arrive weary from travelling. The men in blue will feed off the energy of their supporters, channelling that passion into defensive ferocity and attacking ambition.

Matt King, Grey High’s 1st XV coach, knows his charges face a stern examination.

“Our preparations have been good, there were some tough reflections after the Affies match but the boys are still ambitious about the season and want to put in a proud performance in front of a big home crowd this weekend. Paul Roos will be determined to bounce back after their loss to Stellenberg. They will bring pace, physicality, and clever plans to try and make it as uncomfortable for us as possible,” said King.

The tactical battle will be fascinating. Grey must nullify Paul Roos’ attacking weapons whilst creating their own scoring opportunities. Allow the visitors to establish their rhythm early, and the floodgates could open. Match them physically from the first whistle, and an upset becomes possible.

Undefeated Graeme face banana peel fixture against Selborne

Selborne College welcome an undefeated Graeme College outfit to their fields in what shapes as a potential banana peel fixture for the visitors. Graeme arrive carrying an unblemished record, but complacency against a wounded opponent could prove costly.

Selborne have endured a nightmarish start to their campaign. Off-field issues have disrupted their preparation and focus, contributing to a solitary victory, against Parktown on the Easter festival circuit. One draw against Stirling offers scant consolation alongside tough defeats to Framesby, Pearson and Rondebosch.

For Selborne, this represents a golden opportunity to showcase their class and salvage pride from a troubled season. The quality exists within their squad; unlocking it requires confidence and cohesion. A statement victory over unbeaten opposition would provide both.

Graeme College, meanwhile, cannot afford to underestimate their struggling hosts. Selborne remain a dangerous side on their day, and desperation breeds intensity. The visitors must maintain the standards that have carried them through an undefeated campaign thus far.

Approach this fixture with complacency, and their perfect record could slip away in Port Elizabeth.
