Strap yourselves in, rugby fans. The Western Cape is about to witness a weekend of schoolboy rugby warfare that promises bone-rattling collisions, tactical masterclasses, and enough drama to fill a season.
From the hallowed turf of Rondebosch to the intimidating confines of “Die Plaas” at Oakdale, five mouth-watering fixtures will determine bragging rights and reputations across the province.
Boishaai welcome Stellenberg, Rondebosch host Paul Roos, Wynberg brace for Grey High School’s invasion from Gqeberha, Boland Landbou square off against SACS, and Oakdale prepare to welcome Outeniqua to Riversdal.
Buckle up. This is going to be special.
Rondebosch vs Paul Roos: Aerial warfare over the Mother City
The marquee clash of the weekend sees Rondebosch welcome the maroon juggernaut from Stellenbosch to Cape Town and director of rugby Clint van Rensburg knows exactly what’s coming.
Paul Roos swept across Durbanville last weekend, hammering out a 64-19 victory built on their suffocating aerial bombardment. The Maroon’s kicking game has become their signature weapon this season, pinning opponents deep and feasting on the scraps.
“We will need to handle their very impressive kicking game and make sure that we win the battle in the air, or at least get some of the scraps when the ball goes to deck,” Van Rensburg admitted. “Possession is going to be key for us if we stand any chance of applying pressure on them.”
Rondebosch arrive with momentum, having performed admirably at the Grey High festival before narrowly edging SACS last weekend. But Van Rensburg is acutely aware his side hasn’t yet fired on all cylinders.
“We have not yet clicked properly this season. This weekend we have a wonderful opportunity to see if we can stand up and produce a performance that we know we have in us,” he said.
“We have shown glimpses of what we are capable of, but the real test will be on Saturday against a powerhouse of schoolboy rugby.”
If Rondebosch can’t win the high ball, they won’t win the match. Simple as that.
Oakdale vs Outeniqua: Unlucky streak meets belief at Die Plaas
Oakdale have endured heartbreak in consecutive weeks, falling agonisingly short against Paul Roos and Stellenberg by just two points in both fixtures. Now they welcome Outeniqua to “Die Plaas” in Riversdal, desperate to convert narrow defeats into a statement victory.
“We are positive about the match. They have a good team that shows cohesion and confidence,” said Oakdale 1st XV coach Adriaan Jansen. “We worked hard on a few things, we have to use our chances better.”
Two-point losses don’t happen because of talent deficits, they happen because of execution errors in the critical moments. Oakdale know they’re good enough. Now they need to prove it.
Outeniqua arrive brimming with belief, backing their processes despite the daunting trip to the farm.
“We are aware of the massive challenge that awaits us at Die Plaas,” said Outeniqua 1st XV coach Henry Grimes. “At the end of the day we just have to believe in our own processes and focus on what we want to do. It can be a very good 1st XV match.”
With Oakdale desperate and Outeniqua confident, expect fireworks.
Wynberg vs Grey High: Grand slam dreams meet out-of-town menace
Wynberg kept their grand slam aspirations alive with a crucial victory over Bishops last weekend, and now they face a Grey High side that’s travelled from Gqeberha looking to play spoiler.
Grey High’s only defeats this season? Against heavyweights Paul Roos and Affies. That’s the company they’re keeping, and that’s the calibre of rugby they’re bringing to the Mother City.
“It should be a good one, another test match between two evenly matched sides who are desperate to win,” said Grey High 1st XV coach Matt King.
Grey High, meanwhile, will relish the underdog role. They’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain by upsetting an ambittious side.
Boland Landbou vs SACS: Wounded pride collides on the Farm
This one’s all about redemption.
SACS are smarting from a painful loss to Rondebosch—, that slipped through their fingers. Boland Landbou, meanwhile, are still picking up the pieces after Paarl Gimnasium handed them a 64-15 drubbing that bordered on humiliation.
Landbou have managed just two victories this season: a tight encounter with Rondebosch and another against an undercooked Noordheuwel outfit. They desperately need a scalp to restore belief.
“It was a bitter pill to swallow against Bosch, we nearly snuck it back at the end, it was one that got away,” said SACS defence coach Nick Maurer. “We have bounced back and are looking forward to the challenge.
“They are a big physical team, we’re going to really stay in the fight in the first half. Hopefully in the second half when they start tiring we can get stuck into them and hopefully get a famous win on the farm.”
SACS’ game plan is clear: survive the early onslaught, stay in touch, then strike when Landbou’s big forwards start blowing. It’s a high-risk strategy that demands discipline and fitness, but if it works, it could deliver exactly the famous victory Maurer is targeting.
From the Mother City to the Garden Route, the Western Cape is about to deliver a masterclass in schoolboy rugby intensity.
