Pretoria is about to witness a collision of titansin another King Price Derby series match. Two schools rugby juggernauts, both riding three-match winning streaks, both boasting victory over identical opposition, will lock horns this Saturday when Grey College make the pilgrimage north to face Affies.

Both Affies and Grey College have dismantled the exact same opponents in recent weeks, Paarl Boys’ High and Jeppe, providing a fascinating barometer for what might unfold when these two powerhouses collide.

Form that speaks volumes

The numbers tell a compelling story. When Affies hosted Jeppe, they didn’t just win, they delivered a masterclass, running out 78-10 victors in a performance that showcased the Witbulle’s frightening depth of talent. Grey College faced the same Jeppe outfit and emerged 54-14 winners, equally dominant but perhaps not quite as emphatic.

Against Paarl Boys’ High, both schools showed their championship mettle, albeit in different ways. Affies produced a massive second-half performance to overhaul the Paarl giants 40-37 in a thriller that had spectators on the edge of their seats. Grey College’s 31-21 triumph over Boishaai was more controlled, demonstrating the clinical efficiency that has become their trademark.

Three consecutive victories apiece. Identical opponents conquered. Something has to give on Saturday.

The Affies arsenal

What makes this Affies side so dangerous is the multi-pronged nature of their attack. Ruan Jacobs, the Witbulle’s head of rugby, has assembled a squad that can hurt you anywhere on the park.

Up front, the likes of Ewald van Niekerk, Charl Els and Reubenne Vlok provide the grunt work, smashing over the gainline, securing quality setpiece ball, and laying the platform for what comes next. Their work in the tight exchanges has been exemplary this season, establishing dominance that allows Affies to dictate terms.

But it’s out wide where Affies can truly strike fear into opposition hearts. Estian Marx, Dehan Botha and Dandré Brink are capable of causing absolute havoc in the wider channels. Give them space and time, and they’ll punish you mercilessly.

The orchestrators of this chaos? Halfback pairing Reuben Smith and Fourie Roberts, who have been nothing short of sensational this campaign. Their decision-making, tempo control, and ability to identify mismatches have been instrumental in Affies’ winning run.

Grey College’s pedigree

Grey College arrive in Pretoria with a formidable reputation and the personnel to back it up. Known for their expansive, attacking brand of rugby that has thrilled supporters for generations, this year’s vintage brings an added dimension: serious grunt up front.

The pack is loaded with Craven Week bruisers, Hennie Bredenhann, Xander de Beer, Prestan Bennett, Niel du Randt, and captain Alexi Tyropolis, who will relish the physical confrontation awaiting them against Affies’ highly-rated forwards. This quintet has been the engine room driving Grey’s success, providing the go-forward ball that allows their backs to flourish.

At halfback, Johnathan Drysdale and Christo Crous will be pulling the strings. Crous, in particular, carries a point to prove. Unlucky not to earn selection for the Free State Craven Week side, the flyhalf will instead be orchestrating things for the academy week team, and will undoubtedly be motivated to show the selectors what they’re missing with a big performance against the Witbulle.

History weighs heavy

The historical record makes for sobering reading if you’re an Affies supporter. Since these two schools first met in 1923, they’ve squared off 48 times. Grey College have emerged victorious on 38 occasions. Affies have managed just five wins. Five encounters ended in draws.

That’s a winning percentage of just over 10 per cent for the Pretoria boys, a statistic that Grey College will be acutely aware of as they travel north. But statistics, as the saying goes, are for losers. And neither of these sides are in a losing mood.

Coaches’ perspectives

Ruan Jacobs, Affies’ head of rugby, is keeping things straightforward in his approach to the massive fixture.

“If we focus on what we have done well in the last three games we will be in with a shot, so we want to see more of the same from the players,” Jacobs said, emphasising continuity and execution over trying to reinvent the wheel.

Jannie Geldenhuys, Grey College’s 1st XV coach, offered a more expansive view of what makes this particular fixture so special, and so challenging.

“I think we share many of the same values with Affies which makes the fixture so much more special,” Geldenhuys reflected. “In the past, people have expected Affies to play a territorial game, but they have shown this year that they are not afraid to hold on to the ball for long periods, and they create space to get it wide. We will have to be at our best to shut down the space for their outside backs.”

This has all the ingredients of an absolute classic. Two supremely talented sides playing attractive, attacking rugby. Individual battles scattered across the pitch that could swing the contest. And enough historical baggage to add genuine spice to proceedings.

Affies have home advantage and a point to prove. Grey College have history, form, and the pedigree that comes with being South African schools rugby royalty.
