BEIT BRIDGE – Members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have confiscated illicit goods worth more than R695 000 during a successful anti-smuggling operation at the Beitbridge Port of Entry on the South Africa-Zimbabwe border.

The seizure followed a week of intensified border operations by the Joint Operations Tactical Headquarters Limpopo, aimed at combating cross-border smuggling and protecting the country’s economic interests.

Tactical review leads to successful operation

According to the SANDF, the breakthrough came after the Officer Commanding of 4 Artillery Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Mmamaeke Emmanuel Mello, and his team reviewed and refined their operational plans.

Drawing on years of military training and operational experience, the unit adjusted its strategy to focus more effectively on disrupting illicit cross-border activities.

The revised approach paid off during the early hours of Sunday, 26 July, when Bravo Company, under the command of Sergeant Mavundla, was conducting a foot patrol on the eastern side of the Beitbridge Port of Entry.

During the patrol, soldiers intercepted a group of suspects transporting illicit goods.

The suspects fled after noticing the SANDF members, abandoning their luggage before escaping across the border.

A search of the abandoned bags led to the confiscation of illicit cigarettes valued at R534 531.

At the same time, SANDF members operating on the opposite side of the port of entry recovered additional illicit cigarettes worth R145 770, as well as alcoholic beverages valued at R14 880.

The total value of the confiscated contraband amounted to R695 181.

Goods handed over to SAPS

In accordance with standard operating procedures, all confiscated goods were handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation and processing.

No arrests were reported, as the suspects managed to evade capture.

Acting Officer Commanding of Joint Tactical Headquarters Limpopo, Lieutenant Colonel Joy Stasie, praised the soldiers for their professionalism and commitment.

“This success is a direct result of sound leadership, thorough planning and the application of training received over the years. Our members continue to serve the people of South Africa with pride and integrity,” Stasie said.

The SANDF said it remains committed to supporting SAPS and other law enforcement agencies in combating smuggling and illicit trade along South Africa’s borders.
