LOS ANGELES – A bitter dispute over the estate and business affairs of late country music icon Dolly Parton has erupted into a legal battle, with her long-time manager seeking a restraining order against her nephew.

A dramatic feud has emerged around Dolly Parton’s estate just weeks after the death of the beloved country music legend, with her long-time manager accusing her nephew of making violent threats and attempting to exert pressure over her business empire.

Danny Nozell, who managed Parton’s affairs for years, has filed a request for a restraining order against Bryan Seaver, alleging an “escalating campaign of threats” linked to demands for money from the vast business operation built around the singer’s name.

The dispute has placed renewed attention on the management of Parton’s considerable estate, which extends well beyond her music career and includes the Dollywood theme park, a hotel and a museum due to open soon.

From trusted security role to legal dispute

Seaver had worked as part of Parton’s security arrangements for years and was reportedly dismissed from his role last week.

Following his dismissal, Seaver publicly criticised Nozell, telling TMZ that he was “dismayed by the unexpected and, so far, unexplained actions”.

Court documents filed in Nashville on Tuesday, however, allege that the dispute escalated into threats.

According to The New York Times, one message allegedly sent by Seaver warned that he would become “the hand of retribution for my entire family”.

The restraining-order application was filed by She’s Alive, an organisation operated by Nozell that manages Parton’s business interests.

If granted, the order would reportedly prevent Seaver from entering company properties and prohibit him from contacting employees and business partners.

Nephew says he is investigating Parton’s affairs

Seaver has disputed the characterisation of the dispute.

In a statement to The New York Times, he said he was conducting his own investigation into the management of his aunt’s affairs around the time of her death.

Seaver, who describes himself as a military contractor and international arms dealer, reportedly rejected the suggestion that he was attempting to position himself against the Parton brand.

He said the allegations represented a “contrived out-of-context explanation” and argued that the dispute was being used to portray him as an opponent of Parton’s legacy.

The allegations contained in the court filing have not been established in court.

A global icon leaves a vast legacy

The dispute comes at a particularly sensitive time for Parton’s family, fans and business interests.

Parton died last month at the age of 80, prompting an international outpouring of grief. In the United States, President Donald Trump ordered flags to be flown at half-staff following her death.

Tributes came from some of the biggest names in music and entertainment, as well as members of Britain’s royal family.

Parton was celebrated not only for her extraordinary music career but also for her philanthropy and business achievements.

Her catalogue includes enduring hits such as 9 to 5 and Jolene, while her career also extended into film and television.

The park attracts around four million visitors each year and employs approximately 4,000 people, making it a significant business in its own right.

With Parton’s death leaving behind an extensive commercial and charitable legacy, questions surrounding the management of her affairs are now unfolding against the backdrop of one of the most recognisable brands in American entertainment.

For now, the legal dispute between Nozell and Seaver remains unresolved, with the allegations and competing accounts set to be considered through the legal process.
