GAUTENG – Allegations of drug and alcohol use, as well as threats involving firearms, have put Roosevelt High School in Johannesburg under the spotlight following its matric dance at the Avianto Hotel on 30 September.
Several matric pupils allegedly arrived at the event under the influence of alcohol and drugs, while rumours suggest that the hotel’s staff members were also threatened with firearms.
According to media reports, two Avianto employees separately reported incidents involving the same driver and an alleged firearm. The venue’s owner, Trevor D’Oliveira, reportedly said Avianto could not independently confirm whether a firearm was involved, but CCTV footage had been preserved.
It has also been reported that some pupils were allegedly severely under the influence of alcohol, with staff reporting the smell of dagga around the venue. The reports also allege that staff members experienced verbal abuse from parents and pupils, with one teacher allegedly shoved by a parent.
The event at the upmarket venue was reportedly cut short following the alleged incidents.
Christel Venter, the school’s principal, was reportedly not initially present at the dance but arrived after being alerted to the alleged incidents
The page appears to have since been removed.
NovaNews contacted the school on multiple occasions for comment, but had not received a response by the time of publication.
