VILLIERSDORP – Four alleged extortionists have been arrested for the alleged possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The suspects were arrested on Wednesday 7 October after police found two unlicensed firearms and ammunition in a vehicle.

Villiersdorp police were following up on information about alleged extortionists who were reportedly driving a grey Kia Picanto and a Suzuki Swift. It is alleged that they were targeting spaza shop owners in the area.

Police subsequently spotted the Suzuki Swift and stopped the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle and its occupants allegedly resulted in the discovery of a 9mm pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition and a Star .45-calibre firearm with 14 rounds of ammunition.

The suspects, aged between 21 and 39, are expected to appear in the Caledon Magistrates’ Court on Friday 9 October.

Investigation under way

Police have not indicated whether the four suspects have been directly linked to the alleged extortion of spaza shop owners.

It is also not yet clear whether the firearms have been linked to any other crimes.

The arrests come amid police efforts to remove illegal firearms from communities, as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the firearms and the information that led officers to the vehicle.

Further details about the investigation, including whether additional charges could follow, are expected as the suspects appear in court.

Police have urged members of the public with information about illegal firearms or criminal activity to report it to police.
