CAPE TOWN – The Retreat indoor pool has temporarily closed its doors for approximately one month starting Monday 2 March, as the City of Cape Town undertakes essential repair and restoration works to prepare the facility for the upcoming winter season.
The closure affects one of four indoor pools operating year-round throughout the city, requiring urgent attention to address storm damage sustained during the previous winter period.
Comprehensive repair programme
The extensive repair project targets multiple structural issues caused by severe weather conditions. Work includes removal and replacement of damaged roof sheeting, side wall flashings, downpipes and gutters, alongside the installation of new fixed panel high-level windows.
Full waterproofing of the roof represents a critical component of the restoration, ensuring the facility can withstand future winter storms and provide reliable service to the community.
The damaged elements, particularly high-level fixed panel windows, suffered significant impact during last winter’s severe weather, necessitating complete replacement rather than temporary repairs.
Mayco member for Community Services and Health Francine Higham emphasised the proactive approach to facility maintenance.
“These repairs have been prioritised to ensure the facility is fully prepared for the upcoming winter period,” she explained.
“The projected duration of the works is approximately one month. Closure notices have been placed at key points throughout the facility, and the community has been formally notified.”
Ongoing communication
City officials have implemented communication strategies to keep pool users informed throughout the repair process. Closure notices are prominently displayed at facility entry points, while formal community notifications ensure widespread awareness of the temporary disruption.
Higham expressed gratitude for community understanding during the necessary closure period.
“We thank patrons for their understanding, and the city will provide updates as the project progresses.”
