A double life sentence has been pursued by the Welkom Family Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, and handed down in the Odendaalsrus Regional Court.

WELKOM – The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Free State, Maj Genl. Apathia Modise, welcomed the double life sentence achieved by Welkom Family Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Odendaalsrus Regional Court, Lejweleputswa District.

WO Jessica Saayman completed the investigation in which Jabulani Stanley Mahlanyane (41) was accused of two separate rape cases targeted elderly victims.

The first incident happened on 25 December 2021 at 22:15 when the accused got into the 67-year-old victim’s home, climbed into bed with her whilst she was asleep. He then undressed her and raped her. The second offence was committed on 17 September 2022 when a 70-year-old victim welcomed the same accused into her home because she had seen him before when he visited her daughter. The accused attacked the victim, forcefully undressed her, and then violated her sexually.

The Odendaalsrus Regional Court, Saayman of Welkom Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences together with Magangeni Baloyi of National Prosecuting Authority concluded presenting the two rape cases on Wednesday 11 February.

Presiding Judicial Officer, Magistrate Nompumelelo Gusha handed Mahlanyane two separate life sentences; for the rape of the 67-year-old victim and sexually violating the 70-year-old victim.
