A major drug trafficking operation worth approximately R28 million was dismantled in Gqeberha’s Coega Industrial Area yesterday, 2 October, when authorities intercepted a significant narcotics shipment and apprehended three individuals connected to the illicit trade network.

According to a police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, the Gqeberha Flying Squad was busy with crime prevention duties and was patrolling the highway and surrounding areas.

While patrolling the M17 in the Coega Industrial Area, they noticed a white Toyota RAV4 that was stationary on the side of the road and noticed two men carrying big bags from the bushes and loading them into the back of the vehicle.

She added that the members stopped and asked the driver about what was being loaded in the vehicle, to which the driver claimed he had no knowledge of the contents being loaded.

Upon further investigation, the members confiscated three big brown parcels containing dagga and boxes containing crystal meth and cocaine.

Janse Van Rensburg added that the total weight of the dagga was 164,000 grams with an estimated value of about R22 million, the crystal meth (uncut) weighed 10,142 grams with an estimated value of over R2 million, and the cocaine weighed 2,124 grams with an estimated value of just over R5 million. The total estimated value of the drugs found is almost R 30 million.

The three suspects, aged between 35 and 38, were detained on charges relating to the possession and dealing in drugs.

The District Commissioner, Major General Vuyisile Ncata, commended the members involved for their commitment and dedication, emphasising that the fight against drugs remains a top priority for the SAPS. Ncata said,

The SAPS calls on communities to continue working with the police by reporting any suspicious activities linked to drug dealing or organised crime.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear before the Motherwell Magistrates’ Court soon.
