Pretoria Capitals produced a commanding all-round performance to defeat MI Cape Town by 53 runs in their Betway SA20 clash at SuperSport Park on Monday, with clinical bowling restricting the visitors to 132/7 in pursuit of 186.

Sherfane Rutherford’s explosive 53 (27) propelled Capitals to 185/9 before the bowlers dismantled MI Cape Town’s chase with Keshav Maharaj and Lungi Ngidi leading the demolition.

MI Cape Town won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision that initially appeared vindicated when George Linde removed Shai Hope for seven in the third over, with Capitals on 21-1. Kagiso Rabada struck in the fifth over, bowling Connor Esterhuizen for 24 with a delivery that sent the stumps flying, leaving the hosts struggling at 35/2 during the powerplay.

Wihan Lubbe attempted to rebuild, but Rashid Khan’s googly deceived Lubbe for 21 in the 10th over. Rabada returned to bowl Jordan Cox for 24 in the 13th over as Capitals stuttered to 89/4.

Rutherford 53(27) seized control, surviving an LBW review in the 14th over before benefiting from Corbin Bosch dropping a difficult chance in the 18th. Dewald Brevis provided valuable support with 34(19), though Tiaan van Vuuren spilt a boundary catch off his bat. Brevis fell caught behind off Karim Janat in the 19th over, whilst Rutherford perished attempting a boundary off the final delivery, having anchored Capitals to a competitive 185 total.

The chase began poorly for MI Cape Town as Ryan Rickelton sliced a Gideon Peters delivery high which was caught by Connor Esterhuizen, leaving the visitors on 28/2 in the sixth over. Rassie van der Dussen had earlier departed for 15 when Jordan Cox produced a diving catch.

Nicholas Pooran struck a six before falling to Andre Russell for 17, caught at 46/3 in the ninth over. Gideon Peters then claimed two wickets in consecutive deliveries, both caught by Brevis, removing Corbin Bosch for two and Janat for a duck as MI Cape Town collapsed to 55/5.

George Linde attempted to launch Keshav Maharaj to the boundary in the 10th over but was caught by Esterhuizen for a duck. By the 14th over, MI Cape Town required nearly 18 runs per over at 76/6, the target effectively beyond reach.

Jason Smith was caught for 13 in the 16th over after a Lizaad Williams delivery, leaving MI Cape Town on 89/7. Reeza Hendricks compiled a fighting half-century but lacked support as Capitals restricted the visitors to 132/7, sealing a comprehensive 53-run victory.
