WATCH | President to address nation following Constitutional Court ruling on Phala Phala report

The President is set to address the nation tonight following the judgment of the Constitutional Court in the case brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters challenging the National Assembly’s decision with respect to Section 89 proceedings against the President.

The landmark ruling means the matter is set to be referred to an impeachment committee and reconsidered through proper constitutional processes, marking a significant development in the ongoing Phala Phala saga.

The Constitutional Court’s decision overturns Parliament’s previous rejection of the report, which investigated allegations surrounding foreign currency found at the President’s Phala Phala farm. The court found that the parliamentary process used to dismiss the report did not comply with constitutional requirements.

With the matter now heading to an impeachment committee, speculation has mounted over whether the President will stepdown from office. Some political observers have questioned whether Deputy President Paul Mashatile could assume the presidency should such a scenario unfold.

The impeachment committee will be tasked with conducting a thorough investigation following the proper constitutional procedures outlined by the court. This process could take several weeks or months to complete.

The Phala Phala matter has been a source of political controversy since the allegations first emerged, with opposition parties calling for accountability and transparency. The Constitutional Court’s intervention now ensures the matter receives the constitutional scrutiny it requires.

Parliament will be required to establish the impeachment committee in accordance with the court’s directive and constitutional provisions governing such proceedings.
