A swift intelligence-driven operation on the N1 highway near Beaufort West has led to the confiscation of illicit drugs with an estimated street value of R5.85 million, in what authorities are calling a significant blow to the drug trade in the Western Cape.

The operation, carried out on Thursday 10 September at approximately 22:40, was a joint effort involving members of the Western Cape Organised Crime Investigations, Crime Intelligence and the Beaufort West Police. Acting on information received, the multidisciplinary team intercepted a vehicle travelling along the N1 and brought it to a halt before conducting a search.

The haul

The search yielded a substantial haul: 57 000 Mandrax tablets and five kilograms of cocaine. Police arrested the 46-year-old driver of the vehicle on a charge of dealing in drugs.

The suspect, who remains in police custody, is expected to make his first court appearance in the Beaufort West Magistrate’s Court on Monday 14 September.

Provincial commissioner’s response

Western Cape provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi commended the officers involved, praising their efforts to curb the influx of illicit drugs into vulnerable communities across the province.

“This operation demonstrates the value of intelligence-led policing and the commitment of our members to protect communities from the scourge of drugs,” the provincial commissioner said.

The seizure marks one of the larger drug interceptions on the N1 corridor in recent months and underscores the route’s continued use as a conduit for trafficking illicit substances into the Western Cape. Police have indicated that further investigations are ongoing.
