Cape Town saw a major drug bust this past weekend when the Flying Squad seized a R2 million Mandrax haul on the N1 near Kraaifontein, on the city’s outskirts.
Police intercepted the Volvo truck on Saturday as it transported drugs from Johannesburg to Cape Town, in a joint operation by the Flying Squad and Crime Intelligence, according to the office of the provincial police commissioner.
“Acting on intelligence received, the team spotted the truck and stopped in at a petrol station on the N1. A search was conducted and police found two duffel bags containing Madrax tablets with an estimated street value of R2 million,” says provincial police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala.
In total 41 0000 Mandrax tablets were seized and the truck driver, a 44- year-old Zimbabwean national was arrested.
The man is due to appear in at the the Kuilsriver Magistrate’s Court today for possession and dealing in drugs.

Rob Bisset, chair of the Tygerberg sub-district of the Western Cape provincial Community Police Forum Board, welcomed the bust, saying it prevented a significant quantity of drugs from reaching Cape Town’s streets, where communities are being devastated by substance abuse. He expressed gratitude for the tipoff that led police to the haul. Bisset urged communities to keep coming forward with information.
