STANDERTON, MPUMALANGA – A 59-year-old man has been arrested in Standerton following the discovery of more than 56 000 videos and images depicting child sexual abuse material, marking the 16th arrest under the ongoing SAPS Operation Bad Vibes.

Police spokesperson Lt Col Amanda van Wyk said the arrest took place on Wednesday, 30 July, when an integrated police team executed a search-and-seizure warrant at the suspect’s premises.

The operation, conducted on the eve of Women’s Month, also resulted in the seizure of 15 licensed firearms and several digital devices. Forensic experts processing the scene uncovered the massive cache of illegal material during their investigation, which remains ongoing.

The discovery represents one of the largest seizures of child sexual abuse material in the region under the operation.

The suspect appeared in the Standerton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 31 July, where the case was postponed to 4 August for a formal bail application.

The operation was spearheaded by the Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) Unit in Mpumalanga, working alongside the US Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the US Embassy, the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), and designated firearm officers in Standerton. Launched in 2023, Operation Bad Vibes is a joint initiative between the South African Police Service and the US Department of Homeland Security Investigations.

The operation specifically targets individuals in South Africa linked to the accessing, possession, manufacturing, and distribution of child sexual abuse material on a global scale. With 16 arrests now made under the operation, authorities continue their efforts to dismantle networks involved in the exploitation of children.
