CAPE TOWN – A joint operation between Western Cape police and fisheries officials has resulted in the confiscation of prohibited marine resources valued at R100 000 and the arrest of a 46-year-old suspect.

The operation, conducted on Thursday, 10 July, saw members of the Maitland Flying Squad working alongside the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) in a compliance inspection at a business premises in Monte Vista.

During a thorough search of the premises, officers discovered a significant cache of illegal marine products, including various species of fish, frogs, crabs, and lobster tails. The haul, with an estimated street value of R100 000, represents a substantial blow to the illegal marine trade network operating in the region.

The suspect, found on the premises during the raid, was immediately arrested and taken to Goodwood SAPS for processing. He faces charges of selling prohibited marine species and illegal possession of prohibited marine species under the Sea Fishery Act.

The arrested individual is expected to appear before the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court once formally charged.

This operation underscores the Western Cape police’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection and the preservation of marine resources. The collaboration between law enforcement and fisheries authorities demonstrates the coordinated approach being taken to combat illegal marine resource trafficking.
