Gauteng police have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of a deadly drive-by shooting in Reiger Park that claimed six lives over the weekend, with the arrest of a 23-year-old suspect.
The Anti-Gang Unit arrested the suspect on Monday evening (3 November) just days after the Saturday afternoon massacre that also left three people injured.
The incident, which took place on Saturday 1 November, saw occupants of two vehicles – a silver and black Volkswagen Polo – enter the Reiger Park area before opening fire with random shots. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unclear at the time, prompting Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana to mobilise additional resources and launch a manhunt for the suspects.
Major General Kekana welcomed the arrest, crediting the quick breakthrough to community cooperation and the dedicated efforts of the Anti-Gang Unit. “The arrest will not have been this quick without your assistance, thank you,” Kekana said in a statement. “From the engagements that we have had with you, you heard our plea to cooperate and work together with the police to rid our communities of these criminal elements.”
In a separate operation in the same area, another Anti-Gang Unit team arrested a 62-year-old man for drug possession while patrolling Reiger Park. The suspect was found in possession of 14 ziplock bags containing methcathinone (commonly known as “Cat”), 43 tablets of mandrax, and 105 half tablets of mandrax.
Police continue their investigation into the drive-by shooting. The incident has heightened concerns about gang-related violence in the area, with authorities working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the deadly attack.
