The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has announced plans for a new replacement facility for the Lotus River Community Day Centre.

This decision stems from rapidly increasing patient numbers and the severe structural limitations of the current ageing infrastructure.

Previously, People’s Post reported that a Lotus River mother alleged she was turned away from a local Community Day Centre (CDC), despite queuing in the cold winter rain with her two children on Thursday 23 July.

Planning phase

Health officials confirmed the project is strictly in the early planning phase, meaning no specific building site has been identified yet.

Because decisions and project timelines are not finalised, robust community engagement remains a core priority.

The department hosted an initial public meeting on 29 July 2026 to start open discussions and keep local residents fully informed.

Authorities promise further opportunities for public participation as planning progresses, particularly regarding site selection.

Once a location is confirmed, the modern, purpose-built facility will continue delivering all essential primary healthcare services currently available.

These include chronic disease management, dental care, X-rays, family planning, a pharmacy, and dedicated women’s and child health services.

Crucially, the upgrade will introduce advanced technology, dedicated rehabilitation spaces, more consulting rooms, and enhanced patient privacy.

The department remains fully committed to collaborating with local stakeholders to deliver a properly staffed, future-proof medical hub that elevates the entire patient experience.
