A community fundraising initiative led by local Wynberg businessman Rashmi Kooverjee and an Ottery bakery has raised R400 000 over the past year in support of Abundant Life Palliative Care, Victoria Hospital’s palliative care service.
The substantial donation directly benefits Abundant Life Palliative Care, the dedicated palliative care service operating out of Victoria Hospital.
Cake project
Launched in October 2021, the annual festive fruit cake project unites Southern Suburbs businesses and residents to support vital healthcare operations.
The project’s long-term vision is to establish a legacy trust.
This trust will ensure the crucial service remains sustainable and resilient for years to come. The R400 000 raised during this latest seasonal campaign, the initiative has officially surpassed its initial fundraising milestone of R1 million since inception.
Empowered by this community-driven success, the ambitious organisers have set a new fundraising target of R2.5 million.
The funds will directly bolster Abundant Life Palliative Care, which provides compassionate medical, emotional, and physical support to patients facing life-limiting illnesses, alongside their families and caregivers.

This massive financial injection highlights the powerful impact of public-private partnerships in supporting resource-constrained public healthcare facilities. Victoria Hospital CEO Jonathan Vaughn expressed deep gratitude to the community for their unwavering generosity.

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness also commended the initiative. Department officials noted that community-led efforts play a vital role in strengthening public healthcare.
