Residents of Lotus River now have easier access to essential healthcare services following the reopening of the Buck Road Wellness Hub, an initiative aimed at making preventative health care more accessible while encouraging residents to take greater responsibility for their health.
The Lotus River Community Day Centre officially reopened the hub on Thursday 2 July at the Lotus River Recreation Centre in the hope of bringing healthcare services closer to where people live.
Serving approximately 1 300 patients every month, the Community Day Centre continued to experience growing demand for health-care services.
Health officials believe relocating the Wellness Hub to a more central and accessible location will make it easier for residents to access basic health screenings and information before illnesses become more serious.
Healthcare access
The hub offers a range of free services, including wellness screenings, blood pressure and diabetes checks as well as health education and information sessions.
Community members can visit the facility every Tuesday to Thursday between 10:00 and 12:00.
The initiative forms part of the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness’ Community-orientated Primary Care (COPC) approach, which focuses on improving access to primary health care, promoting healthy lifestyles and disease prevention, and strengthening partnerships between health-care workers and local communities.
By extending health care beyond the walls of the clinic, the Wellness Hub aims to make preventative health care more convenient while encouraging residents to seek medical advice early rather than wait until health conditions worsen.
Acting facility manager Zulfaa Sambo said the hub’s success depends not only on health-care professionals but also on the willingness of residents to take ownership of their health.
“You have to take accountability for your own health to live well,” she said. “If you have any concerns, please speak to us. You only have one body and taking care of it should be a priority.”
Sambo encouraged expectant mothers to attend antenatal care as soon as they know they are pregnant and reminded parents to ensure their children’s immunisations remain up to date.
She described the Wellness Hub as an important community resource that can only succeed through shared responsibility.
Healthy living
“The Wellness Hub is an important asset for our community, but its success depends on all of us. We each have a role to play in supporting our health services and building a healthier community.”
Lotus River community volunteer Margo Jonson echoed this message, highlighting the importance of residents working alongside healthcare professionals to improve community well-being.
She also praised the nursing staff for their commitment and dedication to serving the community.
“As a proud volunteer living in Lotus River, it is inspiring to see the commitment shown by both healthcare workers and community members in working together to improve the well-being of our community.”
Beyond providing basic screenings and health advice, the Wellness Hub creates opportunities for residents to discuss health concerns directly with healthcare professionals.
Where necessary, patients can be referred to the appropriate primary healthcare facilities for further assessment and treatment.
Health officials say the hub also lays the foundation for future community health initiatives, including additional wellness programmes and support groups that could further strengthen health-care services in the area.
Community wellbeing
Chairperson of the Health Committee Anwar Samodien encouraged residents to make full use of the facility while remaining actively involved in helping improve local health-care services.
He said the department remains committed to engaging with the community and ensuring residents have opportunities to raise concerns, submit complaints and provide suggestions.
“We would also like to take this opportunity to ensure community members are aware of the appropriate channels for submitting complaints, concerns and suggestions.
Although services at the Wellness Hub are currently limited, we remain committed to engaging with our community and ensuring that residents have a platform to have their voices heard.”
Residents can share feedback directly with the Facility Manager, use the comment boxes available at the facility or contact the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness by sending a “Please Call Me” to 079 769 1207, calling the toll-free number 0860 142 142, or emailing service@westerncape.gov.za.
