Science enthusiasts and curious minds will have the chance to go behind the scenes at Africa’s leading optical and infrared observatory later this month, as the National Research Foundation–South African Astronomical Observatory (NRF-SAAO) hosts a series of free guided tours to mark the inaugural National Science Month.
The National Science Month is a flagship initiative led by the Department of Science and Innovation and the theme this year is “Science, Technology and Innovation are for everyone”.
National Science Month replaces the department’s National Science Week, which has been held since 2000.
The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Blade Nzimande, said the expanded month-long initiative follows recommendations for broader, more inclusive science engagement.
He said it aims to strengthen public understanding of science while helping South Africa respond to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, green energy and biotechnology.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the science, history, and innovation behind Africa’s leading optical and infrared observatory at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Cape Town.
Five exclusive tour sessions will take place from Monday 27 to Friday 31 July with each tour starting at 11:00 and ending at 13:00.
The tour will include visits to the Main Building, Visitor Centre, and McClean Telescope.
Weather permitting, guests will also enjoy solar viewing through the solar telescopes.
Tickets are limited, so early booking is recommended to secure your place. No ticket sales will be conducted at the gate, so booking is essential. Gates will open 30 minutes before the event begins.
