CAPE TOWN – Kommetjie Primary School recently celebrated one of its own community champions, welcoming local author Di van der Westhuizen for an inspiring visit with learners.
A familiar and much-loved presence at the Kommetjie Library, Van der Westhuizen shared her personal journey into the world of writing.
Inspiring visit
Addressing learners across grades, she spoke about how her passion for reading from a young age naturally grew into a love for storytelling.
Her message was clear: reading is the foundation of writing, and with dedication, anyone can develop their voice as an author.
Van der Westhuizen explained that she is largely self-taught, having spent countless hours researching, practising and refining her craft.
Writing journey
She encouraged learners to remain patient and persistent, reminding them that success does not come overnight.
Describing herself as “born a reader who grew into a writer,” she highlighted the importance of books as tools for both learning and imagination.
Creative future
Following the visit, Kommetjie Primary School announced plans to introduce a Writers Club as some learners wished to “write stories of their own,” said school teacher Charlotte Hendrickse.
The initiative will see each class collaborate on a shared story, with every learner contributing a chapter.
The project aims to build confidence, encourage creativity and foster a deeper appreciation for writing.
