A disturbing video posted on Facebook showing a Grade 10 learner from Milnerton High School being attacked by a group of boys has sparked widespread outrage, reigniting calls for stricter measures against school bullying.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday October 16, shortly after school hours, and the video only surfaced on social media a few days later. It shows the 16-year-old learner being both physically and verbally assaulted while other learners watch without intervening.

The footage was brought to public attention by United Democratic Movement (UDM) member Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, who shared it on Facebook along with a statement from the victim’s mother.

Reports of bullying

In her post, she accused Milnerton High School of ignoring repeated reports of bullying.

“My son, a Grade 10 learner, has been subjected to ongoing bullying, physical attacks, harassment, and emotional abuse by a group of boys, including members of the school’s Rugby First Team,” she said.

“These 18-year-olds, who should be role models and leaders, have instead chosen to intimidate and harm others. I am speaking out not just for my son, but for every student who has been silenced or ignored. The school has a responsibility to protect its learners.”

The video has sparked a wave of condemnation online, with many South Africans urging immediate action. Concerned citizen Trudy Van Noie encouraged the family to continue seeking justice.

“Parents, don’t let this be brushed aside. Stand up not only for your child, but for every student affected by bullying. This isn’t just one incident; it’s part of a broader problem where schools often fail to intervene, allowing a culture where some students feel entitled to mistreat others. Bullying is never acceptable, and ignoring it is complicity,” she said.

Investigation

Police have confirmed that a criminal investigation is underway.

“Milnerton police are investigating a case of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm involving a 16-year-old learner at a local secondary school,” Sgt Wesley Twigg confirmed to TygerBurger.

“The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this stage.”

Kwankwa added that the UDM will continue pushing for accountability.

“We are determined to ensure this matter is properly addressed,” he said.

TygerBurger reached out to Milnerton High School for comment, but at the time of publication, no response had been received.
