Internationally renowned artist Nkoali Nawa is, once again, making waves in the local art scene.
One of his works, Mothers (2014), has been incorporated in the Spier Collection and will feature in the exhibition to be curated by Andrea Lewis at the Isiko South African National Gallery (SANG).
The exhibition is titled “Motherhood: Paradox and Duality.” The exhibition opened on 30 April and runs through to 23 February 2026. Never one to have idle hands, Nawa is currently working on a piece entitled Hard-Working Men. His last big show was in London, United Kingdom (UK), where he was part of the 154 Art Fair which was made possible by the Spier Arts Trust in partnership with Nando’s.
Based in Welkom, Nawa regularly travels to Cape Town and Johannesburg.
In 2024, he progressed from his signature charcoal on Fabriano board, to oil on canvas. Nawa says he decided to diversify to oils as a commercial medium, while he builds up stock for a major solo charcoal and Fabriano exhibition.
He told Vista he was excited about his new adventure into oil painting but told the publication in 2024 he still had to find his niche.

His works are inspired by people who strive to put food on their tables daily, by selling different soft goods on the streets and door to door.
Nawa once told Vista he is a survivor.
“I work locally, but I think internationally.”
He has travelled the world to showcase his artwork and his works are hung in galleries all across the globe.
He is currently working on a series of works that include titles like Women, Making ends meet, and Crates, all oil on canvas.
