North West murder suspect traced to Free State after persistent search of more than a year

ODENDAALSRUS – A 24-year-old man wanted in connection with a murder committed in North West more than a year ago has been arrested in the Free State following an intelligence-driven operation by police.

The suspect, who had allegedly been evading arrest for several months, was traced to Kutlwanong near Odendaalsrus on Friday 12 June, by members of the Welkom Anti-Gang unit (AGU).

According to police spokesperson Sgt Palesa Thabana, officers acted on intelligence regarding the whereabouts of the suspect, who is wanted for a murder allegedly committed in Koster, North West, in April 2025.

The information led investigators to a house in the K9 Section of Kutlwanong, where the suspect was believed to be hiding. Police tactically approached the property, but the suspect allegedly attempted to flee on foot after noticing the officers.

His escape was short-lived, however, as police had already secured all possible exit routes. The suspect was apprehended and a warrant for his arrest was executed at the scene. He was subsequently taken into custody.

Police said the arrest highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and ongoing cooperation between specialised units in tracking and apprehending wanted suspects.

The 24-year-old is expected to face proceedings in connection with the murder case as investigations continue.
