Dagga worth more than R3 million was discovered in a truck at the Nakop Border Post in the early hours of Sunday, 25 June.
This major dagga bust happened when members of the Upington Border Police selected a truck for secondary inspection during Operation Shanela at the border post.
Upon searching the truck that was departing from South Africa to Namibia, seven boxes were discovered stashed among others within the load in transit, Sgt Omphile Masegela, police spokesperson, said.
Police members of the ZF Mcgawu District searched through the boxes and 141 parcels containing 144,340 kg of dagga to the estimated value of R3 608 500 were found.
A Namibian national truck driver was arrested for drug trafficking and will be appearing in court soon.
In another unrelated case, police seized Mandrax tablets, Tik and dagga to the value of R103 650 in Galeshewe, Kimberley, on Wednesday, 21 June. Five suspects who were allegedly involved in drug dealing, were arrested.
Sgt Timothy Sam, police spokesperson, said a joint team under the command of the provincial head of Organised Crime, Brig. Johan Myburgh, followed up court directed evidence linking the suspects with the crime.
This information was collected over a period by police agents who conducted observation and surveillance actions in an attempt to collect evidence.
The Frances Baard District commissioner, Maj Gen. Johan Bean, who was actively involved in the operation, commended the public for being the eyes and ears of the police.
He said the police will strengthen their efforts in combatting drugs related crimes.
