The world still has a long way to go in reaching the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6.2, which is to ensure safe toilets for all by 2030.
Currently, 3,6 billion people are living with poor quality toilets that ruin their health and pollute their environment.
On World Toilet Day, 19 November, the theme is “Making the invisible visible”.
The campaign urges governments to work, on average, four times faster to ensure the goal is achieved on time.
According to the United Nations (UN), the campaign focuses on the impact of the sanitation crisis on groundwater, exploring how inadequate sanitation systems spread human waste into rivers, lakes and soil, and pollute underground water resources.
Groundwater is the most abundant source of freshwater. It provides drinking water, sanitation systems, farming, industry and ecosystems. As climate change worsens and populations grow, groundwater is vital for human survival.
