A special drop-and-go initiative to support the objectives of World Hunger Day, takes place on Saturday, 27 May, in Kimberley.
The Kimberley Harriers Running Club, heading the initiative, invites everyone, especially athletes, to make a donation before or after their morning run.
The club says non-runners are equally welcome to make a donation.
On this day, from 07:00 to 12:00, everyone is invited to donate non-perishable food items such as rice, pasta, mielie meal, sugar and other essentials at the drop-and-go-gazebo which will be erected at the Engen filling station in Oliver Road. Cash donations are also welcomed.
All donations and contributions will directly support Meals on Wheels (MOW) Northern Cape, which provides much-needed aid to those in need daily.
MOW Northern Cape is a non-profit organisation operating from Kimberley, and who provides cooked meals to the poorest of the poor, vulnerable persons, children, and the elderly in and around Kimberley. MOW is dedicated to fighting hunger and poverty by providing daily nutritious meals, a basket of services, and skills development training to underprivileged members of the community.
MOW is a national organisation that was formed in 1964 and for 59 years it has been helping to fight hunger and poverty in South Africa. In the Northern Cape, MOW has 20 branches covering the province, 17 vehicles and over 70 volunteers that are dedicated to the cause.
According to club captain of the Kimberley Harriers Running Club, Roshelle Jacobs, the club understand that there is a need to raise awareness on hunger, since thousands of people across the Northern Cape and the world are facing severe food shortages and undernutrition.
“We love running and love helping those less fortunate than us, we saw it fit to use this as an opportunity to come together to help those who are most vulnerable.”
MOW finance director Thomas Chisveto added that the organisation is committed to ensuring a hunger free South Africa. However, achieving this goal requires the combined efforts of everyone.
“We are pleading to ordinary citizens, government institutions, and private businesses to help us make a difference in the lives of others” said Chisveto.
World Hunger Day was formed in 2011 by the Hunger Project to bring awareness to the global food crisis. The day is celebrated annually on 28 May. According to the World Hunger Day website, 800 million people are hungry, and a third of all food is wasted. This year’s campaign focuses on the role of creating sustainable food systems.
