Copper cable and a transformer, worth approximately R1,2 million, were confiscated by police members from Kuyasa, Colesberg.
A 50-year-old male suspect was arrested, said Lt. Col Sergio Kock, police spokesperson.
Kock said on Sunday, 15 October, at about 21:00, police members attempted to stop and search an Isuzu bakkie, but the driver sped off, later abandoned the bakkie, and fled on foot.
The members then followed up on information and later arrested the suspect at his home in Kuyasa.
Police searched the bakkie and found 50 m of copper cable and a transformer on the vehicle. Tools, including a saw, spanners, pliers, a set of binoculars, as well as the Isuzu bakkie believed to be used during the commission of the theft of the copper cable, were then confiscated.
The provincial commissioner, Lt Gen. Koliswa Otola, commended the police members, reiterating that the police will continue to intensify efforts to curb crimes focused on tampering with or damaging essential infrastructure in the Northern Cape.
