The handing over of six 3D moulded animal targets offers Northern Cape archers the opportunity to compete in 3D competitions hosted by Africa Genesis Archery South Africa NPC (AGA-SA).
These were handed over to AGA Northern Cape (NC) by the Northern Cape Hunters’ Association (NCHA). The NCHA strives to promote ethical hunting and sound conservation principles through the training of youth, said Charles Hall, chairman.
“I urge competition participants to keep safety a first priority and to always respect all animals.”
Schalk van der Merwe, AGA-NC coordinator and representative of the Adventure Archery Academy in Kimberley, said they were excited about the future of archery in the province. Archery equipment was only recently handed over to schools, in October, with the Du Toitspan Primary School in Kimberley being the first to receive this.
Apart from being an exciting sport, archery is implemented as a means of social and youth upliftment.
A total of 48 top South African archers will be in Kimberley on 2 and 3 July for the AGA Africa Virtual Tournament, in which archers from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe will compete.
To award Northern Cape archers with provincial and national colours, AGA clubs need to be established throughout the province.
The winners of the inter-schools competition on 12 March at the Du Toitspan Primary School are:
- cubs (Gr. 2 and Gr. 3) – Hennie Victor (Eureka Primary School), 242/300;
- primary (Gr. 4 to Gr. 7) – Elrize de Greeff (homeschooler), 269/300;
- high school – Tyra Adams (homeschooler), 281/300 and a total of 16 tens, as well as being the overall winner; and
- adults – Schalk van der Merwe (Adventure Archery Club), 274/300 and nine tens.
The next inter-schools competition is on Saturday (09/04) in Kimberley.
