The fourth annual Vice-Chancellor’s Cycle Challenge, hosted by the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley, this year attracted cyclists from as far as Gqeberha, Randburg, and Pretoria.

At this event on 9 November, the 5 km race was re-introduced which saw young riders of the Eureka and Newton primary schools taking part, underpinning the SPU’s role in engaging the youth and promoting cycling as a lifelong pursuit.

The SPU launched this challenge in 2021 to foster a culture of health, wellness, and community engagement across all ages.

The initiative also aims to encourage healthy living by promoting cycling as an activity for all.

All the cyclers were welcomed by Prof. Andrew Crouch, vice-chancellor and principal.

The winners in the different categories are as follows:

  • road bike 100,8 km

women: Elaine le Roux;

men: Marius Wessels;

  • road bike 50 km

women: Petronella Bailey;

men: Karlchen Rost and Meyer Botha (Rost and Botha shared first place);

  • mountain bike 100,8 km

women: Johané Botha;

men: Gert Kruger;

  • mountain bike 50 km

women: Lulu Ceronio;

men: Abrie van Tonder;

  • e-bike 100,8 km

Kobus van den Berg; and

  • e-bike 50 km
