A gospel singer from the Northern Cape who already released four albums, has now received double nomination for national gospel music awards.

Dorothy Mazingane, with the stage name “Dorothy M”, was born in De Aar and later moved with her mom and brother to Ritchie after her dad passed away.

“I started singing in the church choir at the age of 13 years. I later went to Jo’burg in search of fame, and met with Rebecca Malope’s producer,” she says. She was later introduced to Malope, known as the Queen of Gospel.

“My life changed ever since and I was inspired to record my first album, Kae Le Kae, in 2006.” Her second album, Dula Le Rona, was recorded in 2008, and the recording of her third album, Calvary, was sponsored by Eye for Others, an organisation from the Netherlands. In February 2022 Dorothy recorded a single, “It is Well”. Her latest album, The Church Edition, was recorded in November 2022.

Dorothy, who sings gospel in English, Afrikaans, Sotho, Tswana, Zulu and Xhosa, composes her own music and sometimes includes traditional hymns to accommodate the elderly. She also performs at functions, and sings alone while making use of backing vocalists provided by a studio during recordings.

“In 1998 I was most fortunate to open the stage for Rebecca Malope and the late Vuyo Mokoena,” she recalls. The late Mokoena was known as the King of Gospel.

In 2019 she traveled to Europe with the support of Eye For Others, where she marketed her music at different radio stations.

“I also shot two music videos and one, “Inyembezi”, is currently being broadcast on national television.”

Dorothy was nominated for Best Gospel Artist in 2020, and in 2021 for Best Music Video and Best Gospel Artist. Aside from this, she is currently helping developing a young man, an ex-drug addict, in his career. Her latest nomination in two categories, Best Music Video and Best Songwriter, came after entering to compete in the Ukhonukamva National Gospel Music Awards.
