At the Northern Cape Bowls Pairs Championships this past weekend in Kimberley, players not only battled each other, but also the blistering heat.
Despite the challenging conditions, the competition was fierce as teams vied for semifinal spots.
The bowling clubs of Sol Plaatje and Beaconsfield Park served as hosts.
The men’s final saw a gripping clash between CP Mathewson and David Paulse of Beaconsfield Park in Kimberley, and Quinton Kock and Francois van der Walt from Hanover.
Initially it appeared as though the Hanover duo might run away with the game, but the Kimberley team, who are seasoned campaigners, mounted a thrilling comeback.
However, Kock’s impeccable shot-making in the final ends secured the victory for the Hanover duo.
This victory marks a particularly remarkable achievement for Van der Walt, who celebrated his second consecutive win in the Northern Cape Pairs Championship.
His consistency as a lead throughout the weekend was a standout feature of the tournament.
In the third-place playoff, Diann Cilliers and Juan Abbott from Sishen displayed skill and composure to outplay Bloemhof’s Neels de Lange and Okkie Jonker. Despite the Bloemhof duo’s excellent performance throughout the weekend, Sunday proved to be an off day for the pair.
The women’s final featured Namibian Marietjie van den Berg and young talent Nadia Botes from Upington against seasoned competitors Laura Fouché and Suzette van Wyk, from Schweizer-Reneke.
Both teams showcased exceptional skill, but Van der Berg and Botes emerged victorious, combining experience and youthful energy to secure the title.
In the battle for third place, Susan le Roux and Louise Oosthuizen from Beeshoek overcame the challenge posed by Annelie Mathewson and René van Niekerk from Kimberley.
The latter found themselves unable to capitalise on their usual strengths despite their determined efforts.
This championships highlighted the spirit of bowls in the region, with players showing resilience and passion.
