Endangered succulent plants, valued at more than R33 000, were confiscated by members of Public Order Police (POP) last week.

The police received information about a suspect travelling on a bus from Pofadder with succulent plants.

Sgt Timothy Sam, police spokesperson, said the information was operationalised and a bus was searched on arrival at a garage in Springbok, during which the endangered succulent plants were found.

A 23-year-old male suspect was arrested last week for being in possession of endangered succulent plants.

A 23-year-old man was arrested and charged for possession of an endangered species or plant under the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act (Nemba).

Another police success in the Northern Cape includes the arrest of four suspects – three men and one woman – in the Samaria informal settlement in Kimberley for the possession of drugs.

In this case, members of a multi-disciplinary team found Mandrax tablets valued at R1 310, dagga valued at R1 510, and Tik and cash amounting to R1 267,30 in the possession of the arrested suspects, said Sgt Dikeledi Gopane, police spokesperson.

Also last week, police in Port Nolloth along the Northern Cape coastline arrested five undocumented persons. A man was also arrested for being in possession of 8,990 kg hydro dagga with an estimated street value of R1,7 million that was stashed in vehicle tyres.

The provincial commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lt. Gen. Koliswa Otola, indicated that crime and violence place a heavy burden on the criminal justice system, the health care system, and state expenditure.

These operational successes limit the negative effects and the destructive impact of crime, and Otola encourages the men and women in blue, communities, as well as all stakeholders to continue joining hands in ensuring a safe and secure Northern Cape.
