Thanks to the annual Vulture Conservation Trail Run held at the Dronfield Nature Reserve outside Kimberley, an amount of R6 000 was donated to the cause of vulture conservation.

This event on 7 September was presented by the Kimberley Harriers Running Club. It is presented in September as the International Vulture Awareness Day is observed on the first Saturday in September.

The club’s chairperson, Sammy Louw, handed the money raised to Angus Anthony, an ornithologist involved in the vulture conservation programme at Dronfield.

The first to cross the finishing line in the 16 km trail run was a junior athlete of the Teemaneng Running Club, Katlego Matsheka, in 59:31. In the second place was Ali Husain of Kimberley Harriers in 1:03:32, and third Amogelang Matshidisho of the same club, on Husain’s heels in 1:03:42.

The first woman to cross the finishing line was Denice Thomas of the Hopetown Running Club in 1:23:03. Marianne du Plessis was the second woman in 1:36:44, with Sababs Mohapi of the DMRE Athletics Club in 1:44:23.

In the 4,9 km fun run event, Thoriso Mathetsa was the first man at the finishing line in 26:45, and Sabi-Jane Rambere the first woman in 34:27.
