Rising water levels on the Orange River in December may affect visitors’ stays at the |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park in the Northern Cape.

Safe access to certain camps cannot be guaranteed, and as visitor safety remains the top priority for South African National Parks (SANParks), estimated closure times for some camps and operations in the Richtersveld have been published on the park’s Facebook page.

According to the information, the following camps and operations are directly affected by the flooding:

  • Pontoon (border crossing)
  • De Hoop โ€“ Block C
  • Tatasberg Wilderness Camp

Based on previous experience with similar flooding, the estimated closure timeframes are:

Tatasberg: 8-31 December: This area may take time to dry once water levels recede, and road rebuilding can only begin once conditions permit.

De Hoop โ€“ Block C: 8-31 December: The situation will be reviewed as soon as water levels begin to decrease.

Road R12 (between De Hoop Block C and Richtersberg): 8-31 December: The road will remain closed until water levels drop and conditions are safe for reconstruction.

Pontoon: Closed until further notice: Operations will resume when water levels allow safe functioning.
