Encourage men to teach younger males the values, character and responsibilities of being a man. This describes the theme of this year’s International Men’s Day, observed on 19 November, which is “Positive male role models”.
This day provides an opportunity to appreciate and celebrate the men in one’s life, and the contributions they make to society for the greater good of all. Being a role model for other men and boys is a significant responsibility that involves setting a positive example through actions, words and attitudes.
Some practical guidelines to help include:
Show respect for others
Treat women with dignity and equality in all interactions; and be considerate and understanding towards all individuals, regardless of their background.
Communicate effectively
Listen actively – pay attention to others, showing that you value their opinions. Also, learn to express yourself clearly by sharing your thoughts and feelings honestly and respectfully.
Demonstrate responsibility
Own your actions by taking responsibility for these and their consequences. Also, follow through on your commitments and promises.
Practice empathy
Understand others’ perspectives by trying to see situations from others’ viewpoints, and show compassion by offering support and kindness.
Promote healthy relationships
Foster positive connections by building strong, supportive relationships with family and friends. Resolve conflicts peacefully by using negotiation and compromise to solve disputes.
Lead by example
Maintain integrity by always being honest, and uphold strong moral principles by displaying courage for standing up for what is right, even when it is difficult.
Encourage education and growth
Support learning by valuing and promoting continuous education and self-improvement; and teach by sharing knowledge and skills through your actions.
Practice self-care
Take care of your physical and mental well-being. Balance life and work by finding a healthy balance between work responsibilities and personal life.
Challenge stereotypes
Show that men can be nurturing, and that it is okay to express emotions. Also, promote equality by advocating for fairness and equality in all aspects of life.
Be active in the community
Participate in community service and encourage others to do the same. Also offer guidance and support to boys and young men.
The strength, guidance and support of men like this – whether as fathers, brothers, friends, or mentors – make a significant impact every day.
Families South Africa’s (Famsa) services align with this theme, as its trained counsellors provide psychosocial support and guidance to men, encouraging personal growth and motivating positive male role models.
