Several drownings have been reported in some parts of the Northern Cape following the recent torrential rains and opening of sluice gates.
Lt. Col Sergio Kock, media spokesperson of the police, says the SAPS Search and Rescue units are currently still searching for three adult males who recently went missing in rivers near Warrenton, Barkly West and Upington.
The public must be extra careful when visiting or fishing at the Orange, Vaal, Riet and Modder River, Kock says.
Canals are also very dangerous areas for children, especially during the hot summer months.
The SAPS are urging the public to adhere to the following water safety hints:
- Parents should always know the whereabouts of their children.
- Do not jump in the water to save a friend.
- Be extra careful and alert when fishing, especially on rowing boats and rocks.
- Stay away from pool drains, water holes, rivers, dams, and canals.
- Never swim when under the influence of alcohol, strong medication, or drugs.
- Report alleged drownings to the police. Rivers and dams are currently very dangerous to enter to try and save a friend or a loved one.
Safety hints when in an area of flooding
- Disconnect electrical appliances when you house gets flooded.
- Do not attempt to cross flowing water sources such as rivers and dams. Only 15 cm of fast flowing water can knock you off your feet and be enough for you to be unable to regain your footing.
- Do not drive across low-lying bridges that have flooded. Only 30 cm of flowing water could be enough to move the average family vehicle.
- Stay away from power lines and electrical wires.
- Evacuate flooded areas immediately.
- Pay close attention to weather alerts and media notices.
- Call 08600 10111 or contact your nearest police station. Give precise location details to ensure that help can be sent as soon as possible.
