The Keimoes Hotel, a town landmark for almost a century, is set for auction and is likely to be snapped up by an investor due to the property’s ideal location.

Known for its beautifully preserved vintage architecture and rich heritage, the property was purchased in 1938.

The Keimoes Hotel at 46 Main Road was managed by the late Gerrit (Jerry) Spangenberg. His wife, Marilene, has subsequently taken the reigns.

It is now being sold as a deceased estate, as Marilene will be moving to the Western Cape.

The Spangenbergs took pride in personally interacting with their guests, some of whom have become like family. On a day-to-day basis, they were involved in the overall operations.

Together with their small, yet dedicated personnel, they have hosted governmental officials, weddings, matric farewell dances, and many more events in the multi-purpose hall.

The potential of this landmark is clear for the right investor, with its access to typical and unique Northern Cape tourism hotspots.

These include the historic Keimoes Water Mill, Tierberg Nature Reserve, and various activities along the Orange River.

Apart from being on route for travellers to the famous flower-area of the Namaqualand, it is also on route to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Augrabies National Falls Park, and the Northern Cape’s West Coast.

Keimoes and its surrounding area also boast a variety of road-stalls, and wine-tasting can be done at outlets of the Orange River Cellars in the nearby Upington or Kakamas. The area is also famous for producing grapes which are exported around the world, as well as other fruit.

The Keimoes Hotel can accommodate up to 45 guests in its 23 rooms, which include three family, six standard, four twins, nine double, and one suite. Its 300-seater multi-purpose hall makes it ideal for events such as conferences and weddings. A swimming pool, 40-seater restaurant, bar and function area as well as ample parking contribute to the property’s value.

It also has a liquor licence with a fully operational liquor store tenant.

This property is ideal for an investor wanting to uplift it, and a renovation would benefit the local community with the possibility of additional tourism and local business support.

The new owner may also decide to simply renovate the hotel, or turn it into a development based on growing demand for property in the Northern Cape.

  • It is set for auction on Wednesday, 4 December.
