A step-father recently received life-sentence for raping his eight-year-old step-son.
Sgt Molefi Shemane, police spokesperson, said on 13 June 2021 the mother of the victim caught the accused in the act and informed the police.
A case was opened, the accused arrested and his right to apply for bail was abandoned
Shemane said the Kimberley Magistrate Court recently convicted and sentenced the 48-year-old step-father to life imprisonment.
The court further instructed that his name be entered in the national register of sex offenders and in the national child protection register.
The investigating officer, Det. Sgt Neo Noge was applauded for a thorough investigation that led to the lifelong incarceration of the accused.
- Also in the Northern Cape, teams of police detectives from the Roodepan police station in Kimberley and the Sunrise police station in De Aar embarked on wanted suspects tracing operations between last week.
A total of 21 suspects who have been on the run from the police for various crimes were arrested. They have been evading court appearance dates and others violated court orders.
The suspects were arrested at their respective residences in Roodepan and Sunrise, and will appear in court, said Sgt Timothy Sam, police spokesperson.
- Also, one suspect who was on the run from the police since 2020 on two charges of rape and child pornography, was traced and arrested in Kraaifontein in the Western Cape with the assistance of a vigilant Community Policing Forum member.
He will appear in the Victoria West Regional Court and the investigation team will oppose any efforts of seeking bail.
Sam said the public is reminded that failure to appear in court is not excusable; the courts may find grounds for another criminal offence that can be added in addition to the one you failed to appear for.
