Northern Cape Bowls (NCB) once again demonstrated the strength of both its administration and the quality of its players at the Bowls South Africa (BSA) Junior Nationals.
Despite facing significant challenges, including limited practice sessions and last-minute withdrawals, the Northern Cape junior teams delivered outstanding performances throughout the tournament held in Bloemfontein from 29 March to 1 April.
The U18 team impressed all by winning three of their six games. Two of their losses were heart-breakingly close. Only a single shot separating them from victory against Sedibeng, who topped the section, and Western Province, who finished second. Had fortune favored them in those crucial moments, the team could have secured a medal. Nevertheless, they showcased their talent and resilience, proving they possess the temperament to compete at the highest level.
The two U25 teams showed tremendous potential. While one side may not have reflected their true capabilities in the final standings, their matches were highly competitive, and their fighting spirit commendable. The experience gained throughout the tournament will undoubtedly benefit them in future competitions.
Journey to bronze
A special mention must go to Kieran Kelly, Japie Steyn, Andrei Matthee and Kenneth Penderis, who made Northern Cape proud by securing a bronze medal. They topped their section and advanced to the semi-finals against Northern Free State.

Despite trailing 7-0 early on, they staged an incredible comeback, leading 8-7 after five ends. The match remained intensely competitive, with Northern Free State ultimately clinching a narrow victory.
Going into the final end, Northern Cape needed three shots to secure a win, and they came close, holding four shots before an exceptional draw by the Northern Free State skipper dashed their hopes.
Their journey is particularly inspiring, as Kelly and Penderis were part of the Northern Cape U15 team that won gold at the 2019 BSA U15 nationals.
Meanwhile, Steyn and Matthee gained crucial experience at the 2023 U30 inter-districts, contributing to their rapid development. Their perseverance and growth culminated in this well-earned bronze medal, making the entire Northern Cape bowls community proud.
Expressing gratitude
NCB president, Braam van der Westhuizen, expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the teamโs success. He extended a special thanks to secretary Caren van der Westhuizen for her dedication in handling the extensive preparations leading up to the tournament, as well as her role in managing the U18 team. Additionally, he acknowledged Cathy and Gavin Penderis for managing the U25 teams.
He also thanked all sponsors, donors, parents, and supporters who traveled from Kimberley, Upington, and Kuruman to cheer on the teams. Their support played a crucial role in ensuring NCB’s continued success.
