Ahead of the year-end examinations, Kumba Iron Ore recently provided the Kathu campus of the Northern Cape Rural (NCR) TVET College with new desks and chairs.
Sourced locally, the 150 chairs and desks will replace the institution’s worn-out classroom furniture.
As an examination centre used by different academic institutions in the area, the new furniture will also benefit students not enrolled at the college.
“The learning environment of students has a direct bearing on their academic outcomes. As students prepare to write their final exams for the year, it is important that they receive the support and work from conducive environments,” says Amelia Isaacs, socio-economic development administrator and project lead at Sishen mine.
Isaacs says education is a gateway to thriving communities.
“We hope that numerous students will arise from these chairs and desks as graduates, ready to contribute positively to their communities.”
Thabo Magopa, manager at the Kathu campus, says the previous chairs were old and dilapidated, some even broken.
“Due to the bad state of the classroom furniture, we had a shortage of desks and chairs during examinations at venues.
“With the assistance of Kumba Iron Ore, our campus was able to overcome this challenge and obtain brand new desks and chairs. We are grateful and very appreciative of this, as it will contribute positively towards the upcoming examination period.”
