Registration to participate in the first annual Northern Cape Orchestra Festival opened on Tuesday (18/07).

The festival will be hosted in the Northern Cape Theatre in Kimberley from 19 to 21 October.

Musicians, young and old, are invited to join in this first-of-its-kind event in the Northern Cape.

The Northern Cape Symphony Orchestra (NCSO) was officially launched in April to bring together the best and brighest young musicians in the province.

Developing and training these musicians is a core desire, and through its programmes the orchestra enables these musicians to pursue their musical dreams.

A step closer to the NSCO’s vision of establishing an orchestra in each of the five Northern Cape districts in the next five years, was taken with the opening of the Frances Baard Music Hub on 14 June.

Providing free, quality lessons to musicians in underprivileged communities, while providing them with opportunities for exposure, are the main obectives of these hubs.

Two more hubs are scheduled to open in this district in the coming months.

Categories for entering the festival are as follows:

  • primary school orchestra – 8 to 13 years;
  • high school orchestra 13 to 18 years; and
  • festival orchestra – 18 years and above.
