The 80th birthday of a Kimberley legend, whose life had been intertwined with the spirit of rugby, was celebrated in early December by friends, family, and fellow rugby enthusiasts.
This birthday celebration of Edward Herbert Carls, known as Cassie, was characterised by a deep appreciation for him.
His journey began when he donned the colours of the Griquas and the Universal Rugby Football Club – his talent on the pitch was undeniable and he was known for his agility and strategic prowess.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Carls embodied the essence of sportsmanship, inspiring countless young players who followed in his footsteps.
At the celebration event, members of the Griquas Rugby Union were present to honour this legendary player.
Griquas member Romeo Syfers spoke of Cassie’s contributions to the sport, emphasising his role as a mentor and leader within the rugby community.
“We celebrate not just your years, but your legacy,” Syfers said.
As he handed a Griquas jersey to Carls, tears of joy glimmered in his eyes.
Afterwards, stories were told of fierce matches, unforgettable camaraderie, and the bonds forged through the love of the game.
Friends reminisced about Carls’ infectious laughter and his ability to bring people together, on and off the field. His journey from a young boy playing rugby in the streets to a celebrated figure in South African rugby was a story of resilience, hard work, and an unyielding spirit.
Glasses were raised high for his remarkable achievements in rugby, but also for the mentor, friend, and legend he became.
